Timebanking is a way for local people to help each other and be recognised for the help that they give. Everyone’s time is valued equally regardless of the skills being exchanged and no money exchanges hands. For every hour a member spends helping another, (e.g. piano lesson, dog walking), they receive one time credit which they can spend on getting some help from another member (e.g. help filling out a form, getting a lift to the airport). One hour = one Time Credit.
Research suggests that Timebanking has a positive impact on well-being. Time Banks help people to build relationships and provide opportunities for all members of the community where people can learn new skills and make new connections which all contribute to building social capital within a neighbourhood.
Leeds Community TimeBank will host a network of Time Banks in Leeds. The first project is the LS6 Time Bank which is open to people living or working in Headingley, Hyde Park or Woodhouse (although we welcome people living outside this area too).
Our current offers include Men’s Haircuts, Computer problem solving, How to speak Spanish, Dutch, French or Korean, Guitar, Violin and Piano Lessons, Dog Walking, Plant Watering, House Sitting, Proof Reading, DJ Lessons, CV Writing, Lawn Mowing and many more! Our members have requested Massage, Interview Skills, Gardening and Personal Training. New members are signing up all the time bringing new skills and services with them which means the Bank is growing and evolving every day!
